A Broadway show always makes for an extraordinary addition to any NYC student trip. And this year, there are an abundance of new shows to plan for and get excited about! Come along as we explore a few of them and what makes them an awesome choice for student groups looking for an unforgettable live performance experience.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow
Broadway just got turned Upside Down! From Netflix and multi-award-winning Broadway producer Sonia Friedman Productions, and directed by three-time Tony Award winner Stephen Daldry alongside Justin Martin, this pulse-racing new adventure will take students on a non-stop thrill ride! See how it all began at the most Tony Award®-winning play of the year.
This show asks: Are monsters born ... or made? In 1959 Hawkins, Indiana, the Creel family seeks a fresh start—especially their teenage son Henry, who is eager to escape his troubled past. Everything changes when he meets Patty, a fellow outsider, and their budding romance gives Henry hope for the first time. But when a wave of shocking crimes strikes the town, Henry is forced to confront a terrifying truth: Is something inside him that connects him to the horrors unfolding around him? This gripping stand-alone adventure will pull you deep into the world of Stranger Things—where suspense and spectacle lurk at every turn. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
Welcome to Santa Carla. Perfect weather. Beautiful beaches. And a charming boardwalk … as long as you ignore all the “Missing” posters. When a mother and her two teenage sons move to town in desperate need of a fresh start, they soon uncover the darker side of this sunny coastal community. While Lucy tries to piece her family’s life back together, Michael keeps pulling away in search of belonging. As he finds connection with a local rock band and its charismatic leader, his younger brother Sam comes face-to-face with a terrifying reality: When night falls, Michael’s new friends are even more dangerous than they first appeared.
Based on the cult-classic Warner Bros. film, The Lost Boys: A New Musical arrives on Broadway this spring, directed by Tony Award® winner Michael Arden (Maybe Happy Ending, Parade) and featuring music and lyrics by The Rescues, a book by David Hornsby and Chris Hoch. Recommended for ages 10 and up.
Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)
Meet Dougal, an impossibly upbeat Brit who has just landed in New York City for the first time to attend the wedding of the father he’s never met. Meet Robin, the sister of the bride and a no-nonsense New Yorker with a lot of errands to do for the bride—including picking up the groom’s estranged son from the airport. These two strangers begin their journey together navigating New York City, secrets, and second chances.
A New York Times Critics’ Pick, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) “delivers lavishly on laughter, escape, and fantasy.” Recommended for ages 12 and up.
Of course, traditional favorites also shine for student groups. Don’t forget classics like Wicked, The Lion King, Aladdin, Chicago, and more. Even better? Pairing any of these showings with a Broadway Classroom Workshop to give students a true look at the behind-the-scenes skills and magic that brings all of these shows to life!
